The Bluffdale City building department website states that they have currently adopted the International Building Code, which states that all accessory buildings and sheds 200 sq. ft. and smaller to do not require a building permit. Cottonwood Heights

Cottonwood Heights City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

The Cottonwood Heights City Website States the following under their "Determine if you need a permit section": 

A building permit is required for all construction within the Cottonwood Heights except for:

• One-story detached accessory buildings less than 200 square feet that meet setback and height requirements

Draper

Draper City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

The Draper City website states that they have adopted the International Building Code which states that any buildings 200 sq. ft. and smaller do not require a building permit. We were unable to verify this on their website.  However, we have spoken with a Draper City Building Official and they have confirmed that accessory buildings that are 200 sq. ft. and smaller do not require a building permit as long as there are no utilities (power, water) in the building. Herriman

Herriman City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

The Herriman City Building Department web page states that only sheds that are larger than 200 Sq. ft. require a building permit. However, all sheds smaller than 200 sq. ft. that have electrical  require an electrical permit. The following is an excerpt from the Herriman Building dept. web page:

‍What does NOT require a permit?

• One-story detached garages, sheds, playhouses, pergolas, and similar buildings that are 200 square feet or less. However, if it is wired with electrical, or if heating or plumbing is added, then an Electrical/Mechanical/Plumbing permit is required  Regardless of the size of the structure, it cannot be placed any closer than 3 feet to any property lines or closer than 6 feet to any other structure, including the house.

Holladay

Holladay City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

Holladay City does not require a building permit for any any Shed or building that is 200 sq. ft. or smaller.  However, they do recommend that you check with the planning department to determine the proper placement of a shed on your property.

Midvale

Midvale City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

Midvale City does not require a building permit for any any Shed or building that is 200 sq. ft. or smaller unless it is located in a commercial or non residential area.  Then you may build a shed that is up to 120 sq. ft without needing a building permit.

Murray

Murray City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

The Kaysville website states that a building permit is not required for accessory buildings that are 200 sq. ft. or less.

The Murray City Website does not have any specific information about what sizes of sheds require a building permit.  However, most cities in Salt Lake County have adapted the International building code which states that any buildings 200 sq. ft. and smaller do not require a building permit.  We have not been able to verify this and we recommend contacting the Murray Building Division 801-270-2444

Riverton

Riverton Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

Riverton City does not require a building permit for any shed that is 200 sq. ft. or smaller.

Salt Lake City does not require a building permit for any shed, playhouse or similar buildings that are 200 sq. ft. or smaller.

Sandy City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

Sandy City does not require a building permit for any storage shed or other structure that is 200 sq. ft. or smaller.

The Sandy City Website Building Permits page states that structures less than 200 square feet do not require a permit but must meet setback requirements.

South Jordan

South Jordan City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

The South Jordan Building Department states that only structures larger than 200 square feet require a building permit.

The city's "Summary of Accessory Building Requirements" states the following: 

Buildings greater than 200 sq. ft. shall have a minimum 3:12 roof pitch over the majority of the structure and require a building permit..

South Salt Lake City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

The South Salt Lake City Website does not have any specific information about what sizes of sheds require a building permit.  However, It does state that they have adapted the International building code which states that any buildings 200 sq. ft. and smaller do not require a building permit.

Taylorsville

Taylorsville City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

Taylorsville City does not require a building permit for any shed that is 200 sq. ft. or less.  However, all buildings larger than 200 sq. ft. do require a building permit.

We have verified this information with Taylorsville City. Below is an excerpt from the "Do I need a building permit" information sheet available on the city's website.

A building permit is not required for any of the following actions:

Accessory buildings (sheds, detached garages, etc.) smaller than 200 square feet for one and twofamily dwellings. This includes sheds, playhouses and similar structures. However, please beadvised that all accessory structures must meet applicable zoning requirements. For moreinformation regarding zoning regulations in residential areas, including minimum setbacks foraccessory structures, please refer to Taylorsville Information Form's P-1 through P-3b

However, we have not been able to find any clarification for this policy on the city's website.  Typically most cities in Utah do not require a building permit for structures 200 sq. ft. and smaller unless they have utilities (water, sewer or electrical) in them.
